A home alarm system

September 3rd, 2010 Posted in Computers

A home alarm system is becoming more important to home owners today as crime rates continue to rise. A number of companies have been created to meet this growing demand for security alarms. The problem comes from trying to determine which home alarm has the features that your property needs. Not all systems are created equal and each may have advantages or disadvantages that should be considered before choosing.

Simplicity: One important feature to any device is how simple it is to use the system. Most home alarm systems have a keypad that one can use to arm or disarm the system. If the keypad is difficult to understand or read, people will not be able to get everything they should out of the system. Asking questions of the security alarms installer is a great way to make sure you understand the system. Some keypads can have large numbers or letters to make them easier to read for older people. Keypads may also be lit up to make them easier to read at night. Glow in the dark paint is another great way to enhance your ability to use the system quickly and easily.

Location: Where the keypad is located can make a big difference in how easy it is to use your home alarm security system. Most security alarms are posted or placed in standard locations near your front, rear, or garage doors. However, some systems can provide a special place that will be better suited for your situation. You might require the keypad be placed lower so that your small children can reach the keypad. If you have explained to your child how to operate the keypad, it would not do much good if they have to find a chair or something to stand on to gain access to the keypad.

Maintenance: An area that should come standard with security alarms is a plan to make sure your home alarm system is maintained. Testing should be done on the system at least once a year if not more often. The wiring around doors and windows can become damaged and should be tested to make sure the wiring is working as intended. Most advanced electronic systems need some form of maintenance to remain in tip-top shape. Maintenance should be included in your home alarm system package.

Advanced Features: With the advances in technology, it is possible for your home alarm to do much more than alert you when someone breaks into your home. Security alarms can also be tied to emergency systems that will alert the fire department if a fire is detected. If you have a medical situation, a button on some keypads will call for an ambulance much quicker than you can dial the number. A panic button can also allow you to call for help when you do not have the time to stop and make a phone call. If you are being chased or hiding from someone breaking into your home, this feature can be very important.
